3 was launched in the UK on the 3rd March 2003, which given its name was an appropriate date for the 3G mobile network to launch (3/3/03). It was the first of the new generation 3G networks in the UK and quickly acquired a significant market share with an estimated 3.2 million customers in less than 3 years.

One of the advantages over other networks was the 3G technology allowing for higher data transfer rates and therefore enhanced services such as video calls. While its competitors lagged behind, 3 rolled out its service in record time and ended up meeting their regulatory requirements 3 years ahead of schedule.

While in the process of building their own network, Three had agreements with O2 and then orange allowing 3 customers to use these 2G networks when they were out of the coverage area of the 3 network. This allowed them to offer a country wide service, something essential to customers while they grew their own infrastructure.

The Three network continues to push technology and service offerings with features like being able to use your 3 phone in other countries (where 3 has a presence) without additional cost.

3 is owned by Hutchinson Whampoa a Chinese company that is listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange. They have a diverse group of operations ranging from the Mobile broadband, property and hotels and retail operations.
